OT Loss Knocks P-M Boys Hoops Out of Playoffs

There is only one rule in the playoffs: Win or go home. At the Suffolk County AA quarterfinal game on February 24, the Patchogue-Medford boys varsity basketball team stayed around a little longer against top-seeded Longwood, who kept the Raiders around that night, only to act as rude guests by showing the ninth-seeded Raiders the door, defeating Patchogue-Medford, 61-59, in overtime.

Win Over Hills East Gives P-M Another Day to Play

Call the Patchogue-Medford boys varsity basketball team’s 70-68 first-round playoff win over Half Hollow Hills East just that: a win. The No. 9 Raiders (14-5, 7-5 in League I) traveled to Dix Hills on February 17, and beat eighth-seeded HHH East (11-8, 9-3 in League III) to advance to the second round and face No. 1 seed Longwood (16-3, 10-2 in League I) on February 24 at Longwood High School. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

Hansen Sees Positives in P-M Girls’ Loss to Ward Melville

Consider this season for the Patchogue-Medford girls varsity basketball team a chance for the players to grow, said Coach Jeff Hansen. He considers each game as a learning experience for this team, and the January 21 game, in which the Lady Raiders lost to League I opponent Ward Melville by a 44-33 count, shows that the players still have some work to do, but, at the same time, have shown signs of improvement.

P-M Girls Bowling Looks to Roll Over Competition

With only a month to go in the season, the Patchogue-Medford girls varsity bowling team is not only looking to repeat as league champs, but to claim the county crown that eluded them last year, when the Lady Raiders placed second to East Islip. But with the return of two All-County bowlers, Patchogue-Medford might see a county championship up their alley.

P-M Grapplers Win ‘Dogfight’ Vs. WM

Many sports clichés came to mind at the January 7 wrestling dual meet that Patchogue-Medford hosted against Ward Melville, such as “it’s gonna be a battle,” “every game counts” and “a hard-fought victory.” But those clichés perfectly fit in with the Raiders’ 32-23 win over Ward Melville. Patchogue-Medford is 1-0 in League I and is 1-1 overall. The Patriots fell to 1-2 overall, 0-1 in league play.

P-M Wrestlers Seek to Take Down the Competition

By the look of the beginning of the 2008-2009 season, the Patchogue-Medford wrestling team is picking up where it left off. Having finished 9-5 last year, the Raiders had an auspicious start with a comeback win at last weekend’s Sprig Gardner Holiday Tournament at Calhoun High School in Merrick.

P-M Hoopsters Face Challenges in League I

Making the playoffs in League I boys varsity basketball is never easy, yet Patchogue-Medford was able to do it last year, despite finishing the season 9-9. “That was a good thing,” said Coach John Baumiller, now entering his 29th year as the Raiders’ skipper. What wasn’t so good was getting bounced out of the first round by Walt Whitman, which made it all the way to the Suffolk County finals.
